breast cancer can be detected early with regular self exams and mammograms.

If you feel a lump in your breast, the most important thing is not to panic. Women are often very good at detecting minor changes in their bodies. If you notice a lump in the breast or armpit area, see your doctor to get a physical examination. A doctor may recommend further exploration via an x-ray or mammogram.

2. Thickening or swelling of part of the breast

Thickening or swelling of breast tissues could indicate tumor growth, and needs to be brought to the attention of a physician as soon as possible. Changes in the feel and shape of breast tissue is also a symptom of Paget’s disease, a rare form of breast cancer.

3. Red or painful nipples

If your nipples are red or painful, it could be a sign of breast cancer. This symptom is often overlooked because women often assume it’s a side-effect of breastfeeding, abrasive clothing, or cold weather. However, if the pain and swelling persists for more than a day or two and is not alleviated by taking ibuprofen or applying a warm compress, see your doctor.

4. Nipple discharge or blood in the nipple

The final telltale symptom of breast cancer is nipple discharge or blood secretions from the nipple. This often indicates the presence of Paget’s disease, a rare form of breast cancer that develops within the ducts of the breast and grows into the nipple, causing a bloody discharge. If you are experiencing this symptom, please consult with a doctor immediately.

Though breast cancer can be deadly, early detection and treatment improves survival rates by up to 90%. As a result, it is important to be aware of these common symptoms.
